Weather Forecasts getting is Messed up by 5G Could

5G mobile communications technology is a tread breaking up-gradation in mobile networking. But it could have a harmful impact on weather forecasting in the United States, based on expert testimony presented before a U.S. House committee during a hearing on the future of weather forecasting.

Interference from 5G wireless phones could reduce the accuracy of weather forecasts by 30 percent, said Neil Jacobs, Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere at NOAA. Jacobs made the remarks to members of the Environment Subcommittee of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

The accurate weather is an important factor for disaster preparedness and recovery, noted the Aerospace Industries Association, an industry advocacy group, in a letter to the committee so the consumers and government agencies rely on it.

“Interference-free radio frequency spectrum communications that allow for accurate readings make these applications possible,” the AIA maintained.

“Unfortunately, today’s spectrum reality could directly impact the future of accurate weather readings,” the association continued. “Spectrum is a finite resource and as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) looks to free up spectrum for emerging technologies like 5G, the risk of interference with existing users rises, in both the incumbent band and the adjacent bands.”

The risks to weather forecasting came to light as the FCC prepared to auction off the 24 GHz spectrum, according to the letter.

“While it was a multi-year process to get to the auction itself, it is unclear if the proper testing to ensure that harmful interference with weather equipment in the directly adjacent band would not take place had been conducted fully,” the organization asserted.

ARM memo instructed staff to relinquish works with China’s tech giant: Huawei

UK-based chip designer ARM has told staff it must suspend business with Huawei, according to internal documents obtained by the BBC.

ARM instructed employees to halt “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any were pending engagements” with Huawei and its subsidiaries to comply with a recent US trade clampdown.

ARM’s designs form the basis of most mobile device processors worldwide.

In a company memo, it said its designs contained “US origin technology”.

As a consequence, it believes it is affected by the Trump administration’s ban.

One analyst described the move, if it became long-term, as an “insurmountable” blow to Huawei’s business.

He said it would greatly affect the firm’s ability to develop its own chips, many of which are currently built with ARM’s underlying technology, for which it pays a licence.

Cambridge-headquartered ARM had been described as the UK’s largest tech firm until its takeover by a Japanese fund. It employs 6,000 workers and lists eight offices in the US.

In a statement, it said it was “complying with all of the latest regulations set forth by the US government”, but declined to comment further

Huawei got restriction to the use of Android by Google

Huawei smartphones will lose access to popular Google apps for their new designs. The move comes after the Trump administration added Huawei to a list of companies that American firms cannot trade with unless they have a licence.

In a statement, Google said it was “complying with the order and reviewing the implications”.

Huawei declined to comment.

Huawei will no longer get Google’s security updates and technical support, and any new devices will no longer have apps such as YouTube and Maps.

Existing Huawei smartphone users will be able to update apps and push through security fixes, as well as update Google Play services. But if Google releases a new version of Android, Huawei won’t be able to offer the update on its phones.

Huawei can still use the version of the Android operating system available through an open source licence.

Ben Wood, from the CCS Insight consultancy, said the move by Google would have “big implications for Huawei’s consumer business”.

Huawei faces growing backlash from Western countries, led by the US, over possible risks posed by using its products in next-generation 5G mobile networks.

Several countries have raised concerns that Huawei gear could be used by China for surveillance, allegations the company has vehemently denied.

Huawei has said its work does not pose any threats and that it is independent from the Chinese government.

Still, some countries have blocked telecoms companies from using Huawei products in 5G mobile networks.

So far the UK has held back from any formal ban.

“Huawei has been working hard on developing its own App Gallery and other software assets in a similar manner to its work on chipset solutions. There is little doubt these efforts are part of its desire to control its own destiny,” said Mr Wood.

Software Bug Gives Spyware Free Rein With a Single WhatsApp Call. Many users of Facebook’s WhatsApp messaging software were scrambling to patch the program, in response to news of a flaw that allowed spyware to be installed on mobile phones running Android and iOS.

“This new type of attack is deeply worrying and shows how even the most trusted mobile apps and platforms can be vulnerable,” said Mike Campin, vice president of engineering at Wandera, a mobile security provider based in San Francisco.

“While this attack is based on a previously identified exploit known as Pegasus, the fact that it has been repackaged into a form that can be delivered via a simple WhatsApp call has shocked many,” he continued.

WhatsApp, which is used by 1.5 billion people worldwide, typically is not deployed as an official corporate messaging application, Campin noted, but it is used widely internationally, both on employees’ personal devices and on corporate-issued devices.

That can be problematic for organizations, he said, because once exploited via this new attack, the attacker has complete control and visibility of all data on the phone.

This means that the Galaxy S10’s display reduces nearly 50 percent more blue light than previous AMOLED displays (approx. 12 percent), and more than 60 percent more than most smartphone LCD displays (approx. 18 percent).

As ByungChang Kwak of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Division explained, in addition to opting for a blue-light reducing smartphone like the Galaxy S10, there are simple things that consumers can do to help protect their eyes when using electronics devices. “For example, adjusting ambient lighting to minimize screen glare can help reduce eye strain,” said Kwak, “and remembering to blink frequently can help prevent dry eye.”

Going forward, Kwak added, “Samsung will continue to develop technologies that promote better health and make the user experience more convenient.”
